N26 plans explained: Standard, Smart, Go and Metal

What N26's free Standard plan and its Smart, Go and Metal plans cost in Germany and France, cash withdrawal allowances, insurance and how to cancel.

N26 is a German bank with four personal plans: Standard (free), Smart (€4.90 a month), Go (€9.90) and Metal (€16.90). Card payments in foreign currencies carry no N26 fee on any plan; what you pay for with a paid plan is mainly a physical card, more free cash withdrawals, insurance and extras.

Who can open an N26 account

N26 says you can open an account if you:

  • are at least 18 years old,
  • are a resident of a supported country,
  • hold a supported ID, and
  • own a compatible smartphone.

The account is opened in the app, without paperwork. N26 Bank SE is based in Berlin and supervised by the German Federal Financial Supervisory Authority (BaFin).

N26 notes that savings rates depend on the plan and can be changed over time, so check the current rate in the app.

Standard (free)

Standard gives you a current account, a free virtual debit card and two free euro cash withdrawals a month. If you want a plastic card, N26 charges €10.

Smart (€4.90 a month)

Smart adds a physical card, three free euro withdrawals a month and up to 10 Spaces. It also unlocks Shared Spaces, which up to 10 people can join. Note that a Shared Space has no IBAN of its own and no card, and only the person who opened it legally owns the money in it.

Go (€9.90 a month)

Go is aimed at travellers. It removes N26's 1.7% fee on cash withdrawals in other currencies, raises the euro allowance to five a month and includes travel insurance from Allianz Assistance. According to N26, the cover includes:

  • trip cancellation and trip interruption up to €10,000 each,
  • emergency medical costs up to €1 million (dental up to €250),
  • baggage cover up to €2,000 and travel or baggage delays up to €500,
  • personal liability up to €500,000.

N26 also offers Go and Metal customers a promotion of 1% cashback on qualifying card payments outside the EEA, Switzerland and the UK for up to 12 months. Lounge passes cost €15 for your first visit each year, then €30.

Metal (€16.90 a month)

Metal includes everything in Go plus mobile phone insurance up to €2,000 and purchase protection up to €2,500 per claim, a metal card, eight free euro withdrawals a month, the highest savings rate of the four plans and one free lounge visit a year. Exclusions apply to all insurance, so read the Allianz documents before relying on the cover.

Cash withdrawals: the details

For accounts opened in Germany, France and the rest of Europe (apart from the exceptions below), the free allowance covers all euro withdrawals, whether at home or elsewhere in the eurozone. Once you have used it, N26 charges €2 per further euro withdrawal until the allowance resets on the first day of the next month.

Some exceptions are worth knowing:

  • Austria and Spain: N26 lists unlimited free withdrawals on all plans.
  • Italy: three free withdrawals on Standard and unlimited on Smart, Go and Metal.
  • Cash outside the eurozone: withdrawals in other currencies do not count towards the allowance. They cost 1.7% on Standard and Smart and carry no N26 fee on Go and Metal. The ATM operator may still charge its own fee.
  • CASH26: withdrawing cash at partner shops is free and does not count towards the allowance; paying cash in costs 1.5%.

Contract terms: cancelling or changing plan

N26 says its paid plans start with an initial 12-month contract, which then continues indefinitely. Its help centre explains three ways out:

  1. Revoke within 14 days of the start date, through the support chat.
  2. Stop the renewal before the 12 months are up, also through the chat. You keep your card and benefits until the plan expires, then move to Standard with a virtual card. N26 asks you to have at least €10 in the account at that point.
  3. Cancel in the app under My Account, Your membership. On Go and Metal the insurance stops immediately and the premium card is deactivated.

Cancelling a plan does not close your account. You can also switch between paid plans directly; your Spaces, rules and IBAN stay the same.

Is your money protected?

N26 holds a German banking licence and, as a bank, must by law belong to a deposit guarantee scheme. It is a member of the Entschädigungseinrichtung deutscher Banken, which protects eligible deposits up to €100,000. Read more in is my money safe in a neo bank?. Which plan fits?

Standard already covers card payments abroad without an N26 fee. A paid plan mainly makes sense if you want a physical card, often take out euro cash, withdraw other currencies or would otherwise pay for travel or phone insurance. Remember the 12-month initial term before you upgrade.
