Is N26 safe? Banking licence, deposit protection and BaFin's measures
N26 is a licensed German bank with €100,000 deposit protection. Here is what is covered, what is not, and what BaFin's measures mean for customers.
In short: N26 is a fully licensed bank based in Berlin, so eligible money in your N26 account is protected up to €100,000 by Germany's statutory deposit guarantee scheme. At the same time, the German regulator BaFin has repeatedly ordered N26 to fix weaknesses in its organisation, most recently in December 2025. Both facts matter, and they answer different questions.
Who holds your money
Your account is held by N26 Bank SE, a German bank with its registered office in Berlin, supervised by the Federal Financial Supervisory Authority (BaFin). Unlike an e-money provider, a bank can hold deposits, and as a licensed bank N26 is legally required to belong to a deposit guarantee scheme.
According to N26's help centre, N26 is a member of the Entschädigungseinrichtung deutscher Banken GmbH (EdB), the statutory compensation scheme of German private banks.
How the deposit guarantee works
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Who protects the money | Entschädigungseinrichtung deutscher Banken (EdB) |
| Limit | €100,000 per person and bank |
| Higher limit | Up to €500,000 in certain exceptional cases |
| Do you need to apply? | No, the EdB identifies depositors itself and writes to you |
| Payout time | Within seven working days of BaFin determining a compensation case |
The points worth knowing:
- The €100,000 limit applies per person and per bank, so all your balances at N26 (main account and Spaces) are added together.
- The EdB says that in certain exceptional cases the limit is up to €500,000. If you expect a one-off large balance, check the conditions with the EdB before relying on it.
- If a bank fails, the EdB contacts depositors by letter. You must follow the instructions in that letter to be paid.
- N26's help pages refer only to this statutory scheme. Some German banks also belong to the voluntary fund of the Association of German Banks, which covers far higher amounts; N26's help pages do not mention it, so do not assume extra cover above €100,000.

What is not covered
The N26 app also gives access to investments that are provided with partners. These are not bank deposits:
- Stocks, ETFs and ETCs. N26 says this service is powered by Upvest Securities GmbH, a Berlin company. N26 warns that these products "are subject to high fluctuations in value" and that "a decline in value or a complete loss are possible at any time".
- Crypto. N26 Crypto is powered by Bitpanda GmbH, based in Vienna and registered with the Austrian Financial Market Authority. N26 calls the purchase of crypto assets "a high risk" and says a "rapid, complete loss of the money spent" is possible.
Their risk is a fall in value, not a bank failure.
BaFin's measures: what happened
A licence does not mean a bank has no problems. BaFin has published several measures against N26:
| Date | Measure (as published by BaFin or N26) |
|---|---|
| May 2021 | Order to improve anti-money laundering controls; special commissioner appointed |
| June 2021 | Fine of €4.25 million for late suspicious transaction reports |
| October 2021 | Growth cap: initially at most 50,000 new customers a month |
| May 2024 | Fine of €9.2 million for systematically late suspicious activity reports in 2022 |
| June 2024 | Growth cap lifted in full (N26 says it had been allowed 60,000 new customers a month until then) |
| March 2025 | Fine of €15,000 for a late report about a loan approval |
| December 2025 | New package of measures: proper business organisation, special commissioner, extra capital requirements and business restrictions |
The December 2025 package followed a 2024 special audit and the audit of N26's 2024 accounts. BaFin said these found serious deficiencies, mainly in risk management, complaints management and the organisation of the lending business. Among other things, N26 may not write new mortgage loans in the Netherlands, and BaFin appointed a special commissioner to monitor the bank's progress.
What this means for you
None of these measures changes the deposit guarantee: eligible deposits remain protected up to €100,000. In practice, the history matters in two ways:
- Account reviews. Banks under pressure to tighten anti-money laundering checks may ask for documents or restrict accounts while they review activity. Keep proof of the source of larger payments, and read our guide on what to do if a neo bank freezes or closes your account.
- Complaints. BaFin specifically criticised complaints management. If you have a problem, use the in-app chat and keep a written record of every contact.
Security features in the app
Deposit protection covers the bank failing. Day-to-day safety depends more on fraud prevention. N26 lists:
- two-factor authentication for access to your account,
- 3D Secure and Mastercard Identity Check for online card payments,
- locking and unlocking your card in the app,
- limits you set yourself for cash withdrawals and online payments,
- a team that monitors transactions for fraud and money laundering.
N26 also explains how it contacts customers. It says it "will never call you out of the blue": calls are arranged first through Messages from N26 in the app. N26 never sends clickable links or demands by SMS, does not contact customers on WhatsApp and will never ask you to share a verification code by email or social media. If a message feels urgent, slow down and contact N26 through the app.
How to check for yourself
- Look up N26 Bank SE in BaFin's company database to confirm the licence.
- Keep eligible deposits at N26 (and any other single bank) below €100,000 if you want them fully covered.
- Treat stocks, ETFs and crypto in the app as investments with a risk of loss.
Summary
For eligible balances in your account, N26 offers the same statutory deposit protection as any German bank. Its regulatory record is a separate issue: BaFin has imposed fines and measures several times, most recently in December 2025, mostly about internal controls. Both are worth knowing before you move a large amount.
